Car Clicks but Won't Start: What One Click vs. Rapid Clicking Means

Car clicks but won't start? One click usually points to the starter; rapid clicking points to the battery. How to tell the difference and what to do next.

Driver trying to start a car that only clicks

If your car makes rapid clicking when you try to start it, the battery is almost always too weak to turn the engine. If it makes one loud click and nothing else while the dash lights stay bright, the starter motor or starter relay is the likely cause. Loose or corroded battery cables can cause either sound.

Rapid clicking: usually the battery

That fast clicking is the starter solenoid trying to engage, dropping out as voltage collapses, and trying again. There's enough power to work the solenoid but not enough to spin the engine.

Other signs it's the battery:

  • Dash lights dim or flicker while you try to start
  • Headlights look weak
  • The car sat for days, or it's the first cold morning of the year
  • The battery is more than three or four years old

What to do: check the terminals for corrosion or looseness, then try a jump start. If it starts and runs, have the battery and charging system tested. A battery that went flat for no reason may be failing, or the alternator may not be charging. Our guide to bad battery or bad alternator? explains the difference.

One click: usually the starter

A single solid click means the solenoid engaged but the starter motor didn't turn. If the lights stay bright, the battery is probably fine.

Causes:

  • Worn starter motor
  • Failed starter solenoid or relay
  • Bad connection at the starter
  • In rare cases, an engine that can't turn over mechanically

What to do: don't keep trying over and over. A mobile mechanic can test voltage at the starter and replace it on site in many vehicles. See our guide to bad starter symptoms.

No click at all

Silence when you turn the key can mean:

  • A completely dead battery
  • A blown fuse or failed starter relay
  • A bad neutral safety switch (try starting in Neutral)
  • A key fob or immobilizer problem

Quick test: the headlight check

Turn the headlights on and try to start the car.

  • Lights go very dim or out: the battery is weak or a cable connection is bad.
  • Lights stay bright, one click: the starter circuit is the suspect.

When a jump start helps and when it doesn't

A jump fixes a weak battery for now. It won't fix a bad starter, and it won't keep a car going if the alternator isn't charging. If a jump doesn't work, or the car keeps needing one, it's time for a proper test. More in car won't start: 9 common causes.

Frequently asked questions

Can a bad alternator cause clicking?
Indirectly. A dead alternator lets the battery run down, and a flat battery causes the clicking.

Can I tap the starter to get it going?
On some older cars a light tap can free a sticking starter for one more start. Treat it as a sign the starter needs replacing soon, not as a fix.

How long does a mobile starter or battery replacement take?
A battery often takes under half an hour. A starter is usually one to three hours, depending on where it sits.

Get it diagnosed in your driveway

A mobile mechanic can test the battery, cables and starter where the car is parked. Find one on the locations page.
